Is the Colosseum underground worth it?

Yes, if you can book 30 days ahead: the Colosseum underground ticket is €24, with a park guide and the arena floor included. The catch is the booking: online, 30 days ahead, and the first ticket to sell out.

The underground is the network of corridors, cells and lift bases under the arena.

What you see

What you see in the Colosseum underground

The underground is a central corridor the length of the arena, with side galleries and the brick bases of the lifts. The lifts sent cages up through trapdoors; the drains and a tunnel towards the Ludus Magnus barracks start here. The park guide leads the group along the walkways at the lowest level and then up onto the arena platform, which the same ticket includes.

From the tiers you see the hypogeum from above on any ticket; the underground ticket puts you inside it, at the level where the machinery worked.

Plan around: the corridors are on walkways with steps; the visit is inside the 75 to 90 minutes, not extra.

Which ticket

Underground, arena floor or the standard route?

Underground and Arena, €24

The corridors with a park guide, the arena floor and the tiers. Online, 30 days ahead, groups of up to 25, last entry 16:40. The most complete visit the park sells by day.

Full Experience Arena, €24

The arena floor and the tiers, no corridors. Opens 7 days ahead and the ticket office sells it on the day. The fallback when the underground is gone.

Standard, €18

The first and second tiers with the view down onto the arena and the open hypogeum. Enough for a first visit, and the only option on free Sundays.

A Night at the Colosseum, €50

Tuesday and Thursday after closing: first tier, arena floor and underground with a park guide, about 60 minutes, on sale 7 days ahead. The other guided way into the corridors.

Plan around: €24 against €18 buys the floor and the corridors with a guide. Your ticket: Full Experience Underground and Arena, €24, online, on sale 30 days ahead; Full Experience Arena, €24, 7 days ahead, if it is gone.

Tour or on your own

What the underground tours add

Our underground list compares eight tours with the corridors inside. They sell the same park entry in a group of 6 to 25, with the operator's guide for the tiers and usually the Forum. €24 at the park; €149 on the tour, which adds the guide and the held slot. What they add is a held slot when the official shop is empty and a guide for the parts the park guide does not cover. What they do not add is time: the park's 75 to 90 minutes inside apply to groups too.

Plan around: on the park ticket the underground guide is included. A tour is for the slot and the Forum, not for the corridors.

Who should skip it

Who should skip the underground

A visit less than 30 days away in high season

The slots may be gone. Check the official shop first, then the Arena ticket or a tour.

Winter afternoons

The park stops admitting at 17:30; underground groups run earlier. Take a morning slot.

Free Sundays

No underground or arena bookings; the day is by queue on the standard route.

Steps and walkways

The route goes down to the lowest level; check step-free access with the park before you book.

Plan around: if the booking window has closed, the arena floor is the next best zone and the night visit the next best guide.

How much does the Colosseum underground cost?

€24 on the Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket, €32 with the educational tour. The underground tours we compare start at €149 per person.

Do you need a guide for the Colosseum underground?

Yes, and the park ticket includes one: the underground is visited only with a park guide in groups of up to 25.

Is the underground included in the standard Colosseum ticket?

No. The standard €18 ticket covers the first and second tiers. The underground needs the €24 Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket.

Can you see the underground without going down?

Yes, from the tiers: the hypogeum is open to the sky where the floor was removed and is visible from the first and second levels on every ticket.
