The arch is a place to wait for your Colosseum slot; the gate does not let you in at another time. The reliefs run on all four sides.

The place

What is the Arch of Constantine?

The Arch of Constantine is a three-bay marble arch, about 21 metres high. The Senate dedicated it in AD 315, after Constantine's victory over Maxentius in 312. Much of its sculpture was taken from earlier monuments. The roundels come from a monument of Hadrian and the great panels from Marcus Aurelius. The statues of Dacian prisoners and the long frieze come from Trajan. The narrow band of reliefs above the smaller arches is Constantine's own, with the siege of Verona, the battle and the emperor addressing the people in the Forum.

Ten minutes is enough for the four sides; the north side faces the Colosseum.

Arch of Constantine hours and tickets

The arch stands on Via di San Gregorio at the corner of Piazza del Colosseo, outside the ticketed area. There is no ticket, no slot and no closing time; a low fence keeps you off the stone. The Colosseum ticket entrance is a short walk north. The Via Sacra gate of the Forum, by the Arch of Titus, is a short walk west.

If your Colosseum slot is late, see the arch first and walk up to the Via Sacra gate of the Forum. Your ticket: none for the arch; the €18 standard ticket, on sale 30 days ahead, opens the Colosseum tiers, the Forum and the Palatine.

Do you need a ticket for the Arch of Constantine?

No. The arch is outside the fences of the park and can be seen from the street at any hour.

Where is the Arch of Constantine?

The Arch of Constantine stands between the Colosseum and the Palatine, at the corner of Via di San Gregorio and Piazza del Colosseo. Metro B Colosseo is across the piazza.

Why are the reliefs on the Arch of Constantine older than the arch?

Most of the sculpture was reused from monuments of Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. Only the narrow frieze above the side arches and a few details were carved for Constantine in AD 315.
