The place

What is the Roman Forum?

The Forum Romanum lies between the Capitoline and Palatine hills. It was drained in the seventh century BC and built over for the next thousand years. The basilicas held the law courts and the Curia the Senate. The ruins include the temples of Saturn, Vesta and Castor, the Rostra and the arches on the Via Sacra. Excavation began in the nineteenth century and continues.

The ticketed area joins the Palatine Hill above it: one fence, five gates, one entry on the ticket. From the Arch of Titus the path climbs to the Palatine; from the Capitol end you look down the whole valley.

Plan around: the Forum has no slot. Do the Colosseum at your booked time and walk into the Forum through the Arch of Titus gate.
