The Domus Aurea keeps its own calendar: Friday to Sunday only. The Domus Aurea is closed Monday to Thursday and on the first Sunday of the month.
The place
After the fire of AD 64 Nero built a palace across the centre of Rome with a lake where the Colosseum now stands. The lake was drained for the amphitheatre. Within forty years the palace wing on the Oppian Hill was filled with earth to carry the Baths of Trajan. That burial preserved the rooms: the frescoed vaults and the Octagonal Room with its dome. Renaissance painters climbed down into the corridors by rope to copy the grotesques.
The visit goes underground into the Oppian wing with a guide and a hard hat, and ends in the Octagonal Room.
Plan around: the visit is underground and cool; bring a layer in summer.
