The place

What is the Colosseum underground?

The hypogeum was built under Domitian, after the opening games, to turn the arena into a stage. It held corridors for animals and fighters, cells, ramps and dozens of lifts. Capstans sent cages up to the arena floor through trapdoors. A tunnel led east to the Ludus Magnus, the gladiators' barracks across the road.

Today the corridors are open to the sky where the floor was removed, and a section is covered by the rebuilt platform. The visit follows walkways through the central corridor and the side passages, with the bases of the lifts and the drains on view.

Plan around: on the park ticket the underground is a timed group of up to 25 with a park guide.
