Is the Palatine Hill included in the Colosseum ticket?

Yes. Every Colosseum ticket includes one entry to the Forum and the Palatine together. The standard ticket gives 24 hours to use it; the Full Experience tickets give two consecutive days.

What time does the Palatine Hill open?

9:00 every day except 25 December and 1 January. It closes with the park, at 18:30 from 1 to 24 October.

Is the House of Augustus open?

The House of Augustus is a SUPER site, open on the Full Experience tickets and the Forum Pass SUPER, closed on Mondays. The House of Livia next to it is closed for restoration.

What is the Palatine Hill?

The Palatine is the central hill of Rome, above the Forum and the Circus Maximus. The first huts, of the eighth century BC, were found on the western edge of the hill. Augustus built his house beside them. The emperors after him covered the Palatine with palaces: the Domus Tiberiana, the Domus Flavia and the Domus Augustana with its sunken stadium. In the sixteenth century the Farnese family laid out gardens on the ruins at the top.

The visit is open air: terraces, the stadium, the palace courtyards and the gardens. The Forum lies below on the north and the Circus Maximus on the south. The museum and the painted houses are SUPER sites.

The Palatine is uphill from the Forum and takes about an hour on its own. Climb it before you leave: the ticket gives one entry to the Forum and the Palatine together. The Farnese gardens at the top look down on the Forum.

The Palatine is in every Colosseum ticket and in the Forum Pass SUPER, €18, which has no time slot. The standard €18 Colosseum ticket covers the open-air hill. The Full Experience tickets, €24, and the Forum Pass SUPER also open the SUPER sites on the hill. These are the Domus Tiberiana, the Palatine Museum lower floor, the Aula Isiaca and Loggia Mattei, and the House of Augustus. The House of Augustus is closed on Mondays; the House of Livia is closed for restoration.

Getting there

How to get to the Palatine Hill

From the Colosseum the nearest gate is Via Sacra by the Arch of Titus. The path climbs from there to the palaces; the park advises against high heels and flip-flops. From the Circus Maximus side the gate is Via di San Gregorio. From the Capitol end you enter the Forum at Largo della Salara Vecchia or Via del Foro Romano and walk up. Metro B stops at Colosseo and Metro C at Colosseo-Fori Imperiali. Buses 51, 75, 81, 85, 87 and 118 and tram 3 also serve the Palatine.

From 1 to 24 October, last admission is 17:30 and the park closes at 18:30. The Palatine closes with the park.
