How long do you need at the Colosseum?

Inside the Colosseum, 75 to 90 minutes: that is what the park ticket allows before visitors are asked to leave. Add two to three hours for the Roman Forum and the Palatine on the same ticket, and a morning slot gives you a finished day by early afternoon.

The park sets the Colosseum clock: a fixed slot, 75 to 90 minutes inside and last admission at 17:30.

The parts

How much time does each part take?

The Colosseum is the fixed part: 75 to 90 minutes from the gate, with the arena floor or the underground inside that time on the Full Experience tickets, not on top of it. The Attic ticket runs to 14:30 only.

The Roman Forum takes an hour and a half to two hours along the Via Sacra from the Arch of Titus to the Capitol end. The Palatine above it takes another hour for the palaces, the stadium and the terraces. The SUPER sites, on the Full Experience tickets and the Forum Pass SUPER, add an hour or more: the Curia, Santa Maria Antiqua, the Forum Museum, the House of Augustus.

The Arch of Constantine takes ten minutes from the street and needs no ticket. The Domus Aurea across the road is a separate guided entry, Friday to Sunday, with visits every 15 minutes.

Plan around: the Colosseum clock is the park's, the Forum clock is yours.

Other days

What to change on other days

From 1 to 24 October

The last admission for the whole park is 15:30 and it closes at 16:30. Book a morning slot; with an afternoon slot, do the Forum first and the Colosseum at your time.

With the underground ticket

The underground group is timed and the last entry is 16:40. The corridors and the arena floor sit inside the 75 to 90 minutes with the park guide.

With the 24h Only Arena ticket

Twenty minutes on the floor at the booked time, last entry 18:00, no tiers. The Forum and the Palatine within 24 hours before or after.

On a free Sunday

No online tickets: you queue at the ticket offices on Piazza del Colosseo and Largo della Salara Vecchia in order of arrival. Add the queue to the day and skip the underground and arena, which cannot be booked.

With children

The park asks for children to be held by the hand. The standard route on the tiers has steps and little shade. Ninety minutes inside is the maximum, not a target; the Palatine has grass and pines for a break.

With a Domus Aurea visit

Friday to Sunday only, last admission 15:30, closed on the first Sunday. A 9:00 Colosseum slot and the Forum until lunch leave the afternoon for the Oppian Hill.

Plan around: whichever ticket, the slot is the only fixed point of the day.

Tour or on your own

Tour or on your own: which fits the time you have?

On your own with the standard ticket you spend 75 to 90 minutes inside and set your own pace in the Forum: a half day for €18. A guided tour fixes the pace. A standard tour with the Forum takes 2 h 30 to 3 hours, and so does one with the arena floor. An express Colosseum tour takes one hour to 1 h 30. The tours we compare state the length of the option, so the day can be planned around it the same way.

Plan around: a tour saves the booking, not the time; the park's 75 to 90 minutes apply to groups too.

Is 2 hours enough for the Colosseum?

Yes for the Colosseum itself: the park allows 75 to 90 minutes inside. Two hours does not cover the Forum and the Palatine, which take two to three hours more on the same ticket.

Can you stay in the Colosseum all day?

No. The visit lasts 75 to 90 minutes depending on the ticket, and visitors must then leave the monument. The Forum and the Palatine have no limit.

Should I do the Colosseum or the Forum first?

The Colosseum at its slot time. A morning slot leaves the rest of the day for the Forum. With an afternoon slot, do the Forum first: last admission is 17:30.

How long does the arena floor visit take?

Twenty minutes on the 24h Only Arena ticket. On the Full Experience Arena ticket the floor is part of the 90-minute visit that also covers the tiers.

How long is the underground visit?

The underground is inside the 75 to 90 minutes the ticket allows, led by a park guide, with the arena floor and the tiers after it. The last entry is 16:40.
